“The games are coming, we promise…” How many times have we heard that from Nintendo? While I have been enjoying my Wii U since its release, there has been a lack of truly engaging games since the systems launch and only a smattering of great titles have released for the system this year. The Wii U eShop has shown it can be a force to be reckoned with but consumers did not plop down $300+ to just toil around with this awesome channel. Read More

This may sound funny in light of Wii U and numerous innovations, but one thing I really dislike about Nintendo is their unwillingness to try new things in terms of the art department in games.
With stunning side scrollers like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Rayman Origins making huge impressions, seeing my man Mario and his world looking the same in every single game year after year is really disappointing. For example, would it kill them to incorporate modernized art and characters from Super Mario Bros. 2? Can’t tell you how badly I want to see things like the 8-Bits Club, Flurry, and Phanto make a glorious return.
It’s always hop and bop, bricks and grass, and that SAME DAMN LOOK. I’m not saying get rid of it, just mix it up. And my dreams of playing New Super Mario Bros 2 / U with the options of Peach and Daisy (instead of nameless backstory-free Toads) are all but dashed.
You know what I mean? Nintendo has such a rich history but they’re always so damn conservative…
