The outstanding Kingdom Hearts franchise has found a new home on the Nintendo 3DS and the newly released Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is a thing of beauty for Nintendo fans everywhere. I always felt that this franchise is a perfect fit for Nintendo and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance does not disappoint. Fans of the series shouldn’t ignore this portable title as the game is a full-fledged Kingdom Hearts game and is truly beautiful.
Does Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance capture the magic of the series, or does this new entry fizzle out? Read on and find out.
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS. The game features Sora and Riku as the two main characters taking part in a test to improve their skills with their weapon, the Keyblade. Dream Drop Distance follows the two heroes as they attempt to pass the Mark of Mastery exam.
Dream Drop Distance is a continuation of the events shown in the epilogue of Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. The game features a total of seven playable worlds, most of them set in a “world submerged in sleep”. Players will traverse Disney locales the likes of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pinocchio, Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers, Fantasia and Tron: Legacy. The other two playable worlds found in this fantastic game include Traverse Town and The World That Never Was.
If you are new to the series, you will probably find yourself a bit confused and the paralleled storyline that occurs throughout the title doesn’t help as well. The game follows the two main characters in parallel worlds and allows players to shift between those worlds on the fly. It was an interesting mechanic and one that could be very entertaining if perfected. Still, players will find this game satisfying even in the confusion.
The first thing I noticed is that the game is simply beautiful and the presentation is top notch. From the opening cut-scenes to the frantic gameplay, the game surely looks splendid on the Nintendo 3DS handheld. The 3D effect is eye candy and the vibrant visuals make this game a true stand-out for the 3DS. I always seemed to be amazed at the quality of 3D that the handheld can produce and Dream Drop Distance is mind blowing. It’s one of those games that needs to be seen to believed.
Control wise, the game is pretty much spot on. I had no major issues and traversing all the different worlds and locals were very easy and the battle system is frantic and fun. If you’re an action RPG fan trust me; this is your game.
All in all, this is a perfect way to celebrate the franchises 10 year anniversary and is one of the best 3DS titles to date. If you are looking for a lengthy, action-filled adventure, look no further. Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance delivers and is one of the many games you should have in your Nintendo 3DS library.
Overall Myvideogamenews Score: 8.5 out of 10.
As always, thanks for reading.
