2012 was another amazing year for video games. From Max Payne 3 to Darksiders II to NBA 2K13 to World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, 2012 brought some fantastic titles but 10 of them stood above the rest (well, according to us anyway). So, without further ado, here are our the “Top Ten Video Games For 2012″.
Dishonored came out of nowhere and it has a definite place on our top 10 list. The game was brutal, innovative and was one of this year’s stand out titles. I see a number of sequels headed our way soon for this franchise and 2012 should be only the beginning for this series.
9. Rayman Jungle Run
I have to admit, I am still addicted to this game. My iPhone will never be the same as my other apps and games have been highly neglected due to the excellent Rayman Jungle Run. In case you missed our review, click here and give it a read. It’s a fantastic game to play while you are “on the go” and looks superb on my iPad 3. It’s easy to pick up but hard enough to master and will keep you busy for hours upon hours.
8. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Another year and another stellar Call of Duty. Call it how you you want but solid gameplay, smooth graphics and an amazing online community makes Call of Duty: Black Ops II a no brainer for this top 10 list. I will note that the development team did change things up for the good in this series and may be able to keep the Call of Duty franchise from going stale.
7. Halo 4
It turns out that Halo 4 wasn’t even good for a Halo game, Halo 4 is arguably the best in the series and 343 studios has only just begun! I LOVE the changes made with the multiplayer and the level design is out of this world. Graphically Halo 4 is sublime and I am very eager to see what else 343 can produce in future Halo’s.
6. Diablo III
The loot affair has been rekindled with the excellent Diablo III. I was filled with joy every time I looted a rare weapon and the gameplay was spot on. I spent countless nights wearing my turtle beach headset while playing Diablo III and played this outstanding title until the we hours of the morning. Excellent addition to my MAC gaming library (yes the MAC has games)…
5. The Unfinished Swan
What happens when superb style and fantastic gameplay come to a head? We are treated to beautiful titles like The Unfinished Swan. While the game is short in length, it makes up in pure style and gameplay. if you have a PS3, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. This is what video games are all about and the Unfinished Swan is quality with a capital Q.
4. New Super Mario Bros. U
Finally, Super Mario in HD. While I prefer the 3D Mario titles (Nintendo, Super Mario Galaxy 3 HD PLEASE), New Super Mario Bros. U is a real killer app and has helped kick off Nintendo’s newest home console. New Super Mario Bros. U is gorgeous to look at, has a retro feel and controls PERFECTLY. It’s hard NOT to love a great Mario title and New Super Mario Bros. U is not only great, it’s stunning. If you have a Wii, get this game.
3. Xenoblade Chronicles
Xenoblade Chronicles was truly something special and helped the Nintendo Wii go out with a bang. It is a stellar RPG that may not get “appreciated” until much later… The game was thankfully localized and made a huge impact on all who played it. It’s a phenomenal title and I hope that anyone who picks up a Wii or a Wii U will try and seek out this gem.
Journey is amazing. From the mysterious beginning to its epic conclusion, I was instantly hooked to this masterpiece and absolutely LOVED every minute of it. I feel that this game was more of an experience than a video game and needs to be played through in order to understand it. Journey came so close to being our Game of the Year and only missed it by an inch. Even after I found everything in the game, I still love to come back and play it and I applaud Thatgamecompany for consistently making video games like this.
1. Borderlands 2 (Our Official Game of the Year)
What can I say; Borderlands 2 has captivated my interest and has yet to let go. I have Gunzerked, Mechoromanced and Commanded my way through this outstanding game of the year and I keep coming back for more. Gearbox has leaked a number of quality DLC and they are still not finished. The game is fun to play alone, online or with a friend, has the coolest villain in Handsome Jack and has A TON of different weapons to collect.
