Nintendo 3DS Officially Sells More Than N64

The Nintendo 3DS has sold more units than Nintendo’s own Nintendo 64 which launched in 1996. the handheld still has some catching up to do in terms of software sales, but this is great news for the handheld. The next milestone for the Nintendo 3DS is to outsell the SNES shipments at 49.1 million.

N64 Hardware Shipments to Retailers as of September 30th, 2013:
32,930,000 units
3DS Software Shipments to Retailers as of September 30th, 2013:
122,420,000 units
N64 Software Shipments to Retailers as of September 30th, 2013:
224,970,000 units

The Nintendo 3DS is set to enjoy an amazing holiday season so it will be interesting to see how many units are sold from now until the end of the year.

    As the two gentlemen above me already kindly pointed out, the N64 didn’t launch in 2006 (that’d be the Wii). The N64 launched 10 years earlier, in 1996.
