Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal Review

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal came out for the Nintendo 3DS and the remake has its issues. It’s not a typical Sonic title that we’ve come to expect with blazing speeds and crazy flips and runs but rather a more of an exploration adventure than a speedy racer. The blue blur has changed from his running shoes and has put on his platforming and puzzle solving scarf and we walked away with mixed emotions.

How did Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal fair?

Read on and find out.

Here’s the summary for the game in case you missed it: Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal is a standalone adventure that shares key characters, events and lore of the Sonic Boom universe with exclusive environments and characters, as well as an emphasis on platforming and puzzles.

In addition to Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, gamers will also be able to take on the role of Sticks, the newest member of the team. She will play an integral role in the story after her best friend Amy gets kidnapped by the ancient villain Lyric. It’s typical platforming fashion but does not retain break neck speeds of Sonic.

Don’t get us wrong, some of the levels have you flying through the boards but all too often players are stopped and forced to change characters. It’s always hard to try and reimagine a franchise since so many people have a nostalgic connection with video game characters but this just felt like a missed opportunity. I wouldn’t mind if Sonic were to slow down a bit (I know, blasphemy) and go in a different direction, it’s just that it needed to be executed a bit better.

On the plus side, the cut scenes had us pretty impressed and we had a blast playing the Raceway tube areas. The story is lighthearted and fun and the exploration felt decent enough for a play through. We just think classic Sonic fans may need to find their Sonic fix elsewhere.

Overall Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal on the 3DS is a decent experience. It’s not a unplayable game as some reviews may have you to believe but it’s not the best Sonic title out there. The game is not a hardcore game, but the title knows this and ttys to put an emphasis on fun and exploration.

Overall Myvideogamenews score: 6.0 out 0f 10.
