Nintendo Wii U: More 3rd Party Talk

EA, Ubisoft and many others have dev kits and are showing immense support for what Wii U means for their development teams, franchises and the future of the industry. We will be announcing more great development teams working on Wii U down the road.

I love the fact that 3rd party developers seem to be gravitating towards Nintendo’s new system and it will be pretty interesting to see how things pan out. I do have to admit, it will be nice to see an HD Call of Duty title next to an HD Mario and Zelda in the video game store. Stay tuned.

Nintendo Wii U: Wii U Circle Pads Discussed

Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down withGameInformer magazine to discuss all things Nintendo and a question popped up about the circle pads found on the Wii U’s controller.

Check out the question and answer below:

How similar is the hardware of the Wii U’s circle pads with the 3DS’s?

The circle pads that we’re using for the Wii U controllers are of a more advanced state than the one we created for Nintendo 3DS. They will perhaps have a bit more precision. The mechanism that allows those circle pads to work is still very different from, for example, the mechanism we used for the control stick on the Gamecube controller. In that sense it’s very tough to compare the precision or how the circle pads will work in that sense, but personally I feel that we’ve gotten them to a point that when you sit down and play with them you get used to them very quickly and they feel very nice.

Although I was hoping for a more traditional analog stick, a “more advanced circle pad” may suite gamers just fine. More as it develops.

Wii U: Japanese Garden Tech Demo

Here is a better look at the Nintendo Wii U Japanese Garden Tech Demo. I think that this looks phenomenal and has me real excited about Wii U next year. I can’t even begin to imagine seeing some of my favorite franchises in full HD (we already got a glimpse of Zelda…).

Awesome stuff.

Nintendo Wii U: Developers working with underclocked Wii U systems?

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime’s explains the lack of actual Wii U footage from third-party developers. Here is what he had to say:

Developers have underclocked development kits, and worked hard to deliver titles running on that hardware to demonstrate live at E3. However, due to titles not looking much better than what is currently available on Xbox 360 and the PS3, Nintendo decided late in the game to not show those titles and focus instead on tech demos. In particular, THQ stated that Darksiders II was running on development hardware and could have been shown. Also, Epic vice president Mark Rein tweeted during E3 that Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines was being made for Wii U with Unreal Engine 3, showing that Epic is bringing its tech to Wii U.

Given that the Wii U is not arriving until sometime next year, this report seems to make sense. I hope that Nintendo finalizes their hardware soon and gets it in the hands of 3rd party developers so we can get some fantastic launch titles.

Nintendo Wii U: Wii U will not play Blu-ray or DVD

Q: Are you planning on making the Wii U more of a home entertainment console by including Blu-ray or DVD drives, or is it going to be more like the Wii, and just be more of a pure gaming console?

Iwata:

Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities.

The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.

There you have it; Nintendo’s next home console, Nintendo Wii U, will forego playing Blu-ray and DVD movies.

Nintendo Wii U: Wii U Manufacturing Will Not Delay Launch

Nintendo’s President, Satoru Iwata, has stated that there will be no significant manufacturing issues that will affect their business, and they are confident in their estimates for the launch timeline in regards to their upcoming home console Nintendo Wii U.

Nintendo was ready to show the Wii U at E3 this year and based on their estimates, it will be ready for launch in 2012.

Good news for future Wii U owners. Stay tuned.

Nintendo Wii U: Metroid headed to Wii U?

“I can’t give you any details now,” he said, “but I’m sure there will be a new Metroid release making use of the new controller, not just to control Samus and her ship but also to give the player a new source of information. Maybe the player is looking at the screen but has the information that they need to defeat the enemy in their hands.” Maybe you could hold the Wii controller up to the screen and scan your enemy, I suggested. “You could look through the screen and scan your enemy and find where it’s weakspot is.”

This quote was taken from the good guys over at Kotaku. Although it seems like a given that the next Nintendo console will be receiving a new Metroid title, I am certain a lot of Metroid fans are still relieved to hear that the popular franchise is apparently being working on as you read this. Hopefully it won’t be too long until we hear more on Wii U.

Stay tuned.

Nintendo Wii U: Officially Getting Netflix

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has inadvertently announced that popular online video streaming service Netflix is officially coming to the Wii U. In a news story that shouldn’t be all that surprising (I do have Netflix currently on my iPhone), it’s still great to hear that the service will make its way on Nintendo’s forthcoming system.

Nintendo Wii U: Wii U can Support 2 Tablet Controllers

“They were particularly unclear about whether the console would support more than one of their tablet-like controllers; Mr. Miyamoto said no, but Reggie said yes (to me in a meeting),” said Pachter. “Obviously, they intend to ship the console with only one of these controllers, so it is unlikely that anyone will develop games that require two, but they were not clear whether the capability exists.”

- Michael Pachter

So, according to Pachter, Reggie Fils Aime confirmed that the Wii U will support the use of multiple tablet controllers for the highly talked about system.

More as it develops.
